I hear ya!
But you can't even use that device menu to connect to a device. You can use it to pair a device, but that's it. You can use it to add a printer, but that's it. You can't adjust any settings or see anything other than the device name from that screen. I think it's 1/2 baked, I think you're right about that.
I just told my wife what you said and her eyes glazed over at device.
This is who Windows 8/Metro is aimed at - it's Fisher Price WindowsTM :'-D
ha. I do like the interface when I use it for touch. But honestly it's not happened very often. I think they really messed up cramming everything into one version like they did.
I agree, why not simple make it possible to toggle on and off? As much as I might have appeared to be an advocate of Windows 8 that isn't the case. I love the 'style' of Metro, I like all the enhancements that Windows 8 generally brings to the such as improved Task Manager, file copy and better multi-monitor support, it's also a masterpiece in compatibility with legacy stuff but when it comes down to it, the way I use Windows means I don't come into contact with Metro so if I had the option, I'd likely turn it off.
Same here. I could avoid using it and be happy. Even when using my touchscreen. I love the tile idea for Windows Phone. On that form factor it's sweet, and original. And even on my laptop it's not terrible. But anyone who's been using a computer very long already has their favorite websites that do everything the live tiles do.
It's funny, I set my wallpaper to change every 30 minutes the other day. Then I realized that I see my desktop when I start work and when I end work. There is always something (usually a browser or email program) opened. So if the desktop is that low on the view list, the new start screen is even lower than that to me! Maybe in a few years we will look back and wonder how we ever lived without it, but I don't see that happening with me.
Ah, another thing is the apps update separate from Windows. So now you have to check two places to make sure you're up to date.
Just bought, as I realised that the 'special offer' price of £25 finishes next week, and I'm bound to want win8 at some point. Downloaded the iOS and about to burn to disk.
I'm wondering though, is now a good time to invest in an ssd? Ebuyer have 120GB ones for about £80 which seems a lot better than the last time I looked!
A few months later and I still haven't tried it!
SSDs have come down in price significantly but be wary of the budget drives and the controllers they use. There are a lot of cheaper lesser performing drives now available.
Ideally get one with a Sandforce controller or better. And if you can afford it try to get one that offers 500MB/sec read and write speeds.
