Doesn't look too fun, although can't say I'm in the least bit surprised.

Good luck  :-|

I'm just spectating from my igloo.

If these goons aren't rounded up and jailed, and the capitol police force sacked, it will be a horrible precedent.

That was not a well-thought out action, going after the Capitol. While I am not surprised, I am surprised at the destruction; time will tell who they actually are.

There have been several times that improper things happened in the U.S., but they were viewed a lot differently, because they were reported a lot differently. The Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Shay's rebellion - they all come to mind. But the events fared better in history because of the outcome.

Regardless of affiliation, one has to realise that events such as these are a result of the frustration of people who feel that their voice has not been heard. What I find interesting is the stark contrast between the looting, rioting and arson committed in the aftermath of George Floyd who - though nothing more than a common thug and drug addict (he once held a gun to a pregnant black woman's stomach while he and his other thug buddies robbed her) and the characterisations of the Capitol situation.

The American "press" regarded the mayhem in various cities as "protests" and "mostly peaceful protests", whilst people were on camera smashing windows, burning cars, stealing merchandise and cash, and occupying city blocks. It is interesting the interpretation of "systemic racism" when a particular talking point wants to be made, and it highlights hypocrisy of the press.

BLM may be the darling of sensationalist media, but they are actually a money-raising branch of the Democrat party. All one has to do is visit the BLM website and discover that all donations to BLM are funnelled to ActBlue, whose sole purpose is to promote and finance Democrats. They even lie to their supporters by giving the impression that donations are tax-deductible ("to the fullest extent allowed by law" - political donations are not tax deductible); wait until April 15th, as they will discover they have been hoodwinked again by the Dems.

Whether you like it or not, he is POTUS - yours and mine - until January 20th. In the same vein, so will Biden be, a stumbling, bumbling, gaffe-prone, China-serving incompetent boob of a POTUS, who will turn the clock back to the Obama days when unemployment was high, regulations many and businesses were struggling. Biden represents the past with no idea for the future. I suppose all hope is on Harris; maybe she will go heels up again and do something worthwhile other than promoting rampant socialism. But I remain doubtful.

>>> Regardless of affiliation, one has to realise that events such as these are a result of the frustration of people who feel that their voice has not been heard.

Their voice was heard. They voted, they lost, get over it. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, gained more votes of the American people than Trump, but still lost due to the system in place. Did democrat voters at the time riot and storm Capitol? Nope. Can't have it both ways.

>>> George Floyd who - though nothing more than a common thug and drug addict

So he deserved to be killed by the police?

Me too:

>> time will tell who they actually are.

We actually know who plenty of them are, many have already been ID'd. The woman that was shot (Ashli Babbitt) was a keen Trump supporter and major supporter of various conspiracy theories. There's an article here where her background is discussed in great detail. Of course, you'll likely claim it is "fake news" given that it's an article by the Guardian.

We also know that the guy in the horned, furry hat is Jake Angeli, who often goes by the pseudonym of the "QAnon Shaman". Gee, I wonder what his affiliation is.

Plenty others have also been positively ID'd. It's actually quite simple to do when you don't disguise yourself at all and pose for photos - or of course when people take the time to live-stream their actions as well. Not the cleverest thing to do when you're in the process of committing a series of federal offenses...

>> events such as these are a result of the frustration of people who feel that their voice has not been heard.

I understand their frustrations. They've spent the last few months listening to (and believing) a none-stop stream of lies from the outgoing president - a man who almost certainly has a mental illness given that he's incapable of accepting failure. In actual fact, their voices were heard. They voted and added to Trump's overall tally. Unfortunately for them, more people voted Biden and he won the election as a result. That's how elections work. You vote, but that doesn't guarantee that "your side" will win.

For a country that likes to preach democracy to the world, there's a lot of Americans who don't seem to understand how the process works and who could really do with being given a copy of the "Dummies guide to democracy"...

This is the most important point in all this. It's something that has existed for probably 50-years, unaddressed (indeed worsened) by successive regimes, regardless of the political party. Some have taken a stab at ameliorating the worst of it, always thwarted by the billionaire class that controls politicians and media alike (Zuckerberg is merely the latest manifestation). It is a tinderbox, armed to the teeth, and the arrest of a handful of agitators caught red-handed changes nothing. America is barreling towards a second civil war, and (at best) balkanization. It's exactly what I feared ~35 years ago when I bailed. Weimar Republic 2.0.

Rich. The Democrats and Hillary Clinton whined for four years over the loss of HRC. And then there is the "Russian investigation" and impeachment trial. You have got to be kidding me. Seems people can justify almost anything over personal dislike. Ridiculous.

Quote:
So he deserved to be killed by the police?

I'd be interested in what you know about that other than what you read in some rag. Did you know that George Floyd had 11 ng/mL of fentanyl in his system? If he had been found home alone, the ruling would have been death by an overdose. 3 ng/mL of fentanyl has been known to cause death.

Now, Derek Chauvin was definitely wrong in the restraint; for the life of me I do not know what ever possessed him to perform that type of restraint. But he will never work in law enforcement again, and according to reports I read, was a scumbag outside of LE, what with his tax evasion and other questionable actions, But it is quite conceivable that any scenario involving stress for Floyd would have resulted in death, so the restraint was not the sole cause, but definitely a contributing factor. Neither was the restraint justified.

Quote:

Can't have it both ways.

So glad you mentioned that. So the rioting, looting and arson in various cities around the U.S. is justified because of George Floyd's death? How is burning down another black man's lifelong dream of a business, a rack of blue jeans, sneakers, and ransacking of stores related? Can YOU have it both ways?

What about David Dorn, a black ex-police officer who was watching his friend's store and killed by a looter justified?

A lot of Democrats preach democracy, but to anyone who is actually paying attention, America is not. We are a Federal Presidential Constitutional Republic. The Founding Fathers took great pains to ensure that a democracy was not the result of the Philadelphia Convention, because throughout history, democracies always fail.

Right. He also held a sign, "Q sent me." Does that mean he is a British Secret Service Operative? No, he's a whack job.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you said there. But let me ask this: Why is it OK for thousands to protest and commit violence in the streets in the name of Black Lives - who, incidentally, have never condemned black on black murder - and what happened at the Capitol?

Now, the idiots who stormed the Capitol clearly hadn't thought things out well; what did they hope to accomplish? It made no sense, n matter who did it. But did it make sense for rioters to destroy nearly every business on 8th street and Chestnut streets in Philadelphia?

Quote:

You've actually said quite a lot there. Ever notice American politicians who vehemently profess, gesturing and pointing wildly, that they "will fight for you"? Really? I submit that all they do is fight for their own continued self-enrichment, and the continuation of their political status.

Quote:
America is barreling towards a second civil war
Is it that surprising, really? When you have so many politicians telling them that if they vote for them, they will get "free stuff", what would you expect? That's what democracy brings: when the people discover that they can vote largesse for themselves through the public treasury, they will always vote for the candidate who promises them the most. The end result is loose fiscal policy and a bankrupt nation (rough paraphrase of Alexander Tytler/Lord Woodhouselee). The end result is Socialism, then Communism.

Quote:
a handful of agitators caught red-handed changes nothing.
It didn't matter in the riots across America, either. Those crimes happened and were allowed to continue by the Governors and Mayors whose responsibility it was to maintain the peace, yet they abandoned that responsibility, letting criminals riot to their hearts content.

Who do common folks call when the police are defunded? Social workers? What a joke.

In the end, it doesn't matter. I challenge anyone to find the word "democracy" in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, or the Bill of Rights. It's not there, because the Founding Father knew that democracies always fail.
