Managed to get In Home Streaming working after a bit of faffing. Had to turn off some virtual network adapters on both computers.
Over the wifi connection it's not great but still more playable than trying to run it on the laptop. Had to turn the res down to 480p and the fast setting so the quality was pretty shit. A little laggy but not as bad as I was expecting. With an ethernet cable I think it might just be ok.
I took my laptop into the attic and connected an Ethernet cable between the desktop and laptop. Much better and worked at full res. Still a bit of lag there which probably wouldn't be good when a zombie horde is running towards me but it might be worth a try at some point.
Just need a long cable betwee my attic and kitchen now. I wonder if it would work with the mic on the laptop.
There'll always be a wee bit of lag, hopefully it'll be OK for playing though.
Last night I found myself using Putty to ssh from Windows 10 to the raspberry pi on the other room attached to my laser. Then I used xming to remote desktop into X. Then when I was in X I used a terminal to install some packages :$

We had 6Gs left sitting on our 25G cap as of last night (rolls over today), so I was going to get a 'free' dl of L4D2, 'til I discovered it's a >7.5G dl. Will probably run it in the next coupla days offa the march quota. :'C
Oh, and the good news is, I managed to win a L4D1 endgame (in 'advanced' difficulty no less), the farmhouse one by surviving 2 tank attacks, and jumping into the escape APC just in front of the howling mob.
