So what *do* they discuss, then - especially since they've taken all the fun out?

It would appear that they discuss Sheffield.

'Taking the fun out' seems to be the fate of some of these community forums. I belonged to one for my  home town for a while. It wouldn't be of much interest outside the community - mainly haunted by old farts like me or older - but some of the reminiscences were fun, together with finding out what had happened to people and places. One day I logged on and it was gone - or mainly gone. Not sure why but there was an announcement from the 'moderator' ranting about how the forum was being 'misused' as some sort of social network for all kinds of 'stupid chit chat'. He wasn't going to stand for it. That wasn't why he had set it up (the council set it up actually).

Don't know what serious purpose he thought the forum had, but he wiped out hundreds of old photos of the town, even a few videos from the 50s and 60s, plus a wealth of titbits of gossip and recollection about the last 60 years of the town. There were links to older sources as well, plus contributions from people who had come across the site by chance and were hardly likely to come back. Doesn't really matter I suppose.

PLUS, in this particular case, Sheffield.

I don't know how many of you remember or if you were members of Extreme Tech; Jim Lynch was the Community Manager and it was a rather successful forum. I became a member in 2002 or perhaps a bit earlier, trying to find some computer information. I was also a member of the similarly designed PC Mag forum.

Anyway, as tech seemed to wind down (and much before that, really) the site seemed to attract a lot of non-tech threads. The biggest most posts) thread of all was The Thread About Absolutely Nothing, TTAAN. There was an "award" for Most Prolific Poster, the MPP; many people bemoaned the fact that the "award" always went to BS posts, the content of which often consisted of, "Yes!" or "Absolutely". Not exactly a content-based award. The very first post was, "What's the big deal here?" by mikenorwood. What a legacy he left, and an indication how things would go from then on.

One poster named Brownie spent his days at Extreme Tech just waiting for someone to post anything that he could comment on. The discussions ran the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous, mostly the latter. This was back in the days of the forum Flame Wars.

I can understand how some people get annoyed at BS posts. Some people want a more "serious" and worthwhile tone. It is one of the main reasons why Email, facebook and twitter hold no interest for me, because people use them for bullshit. Anyone who emails me jokes gets relegated to my SPAM folder. Those who Reply to All instead of Sender go to SPAM, as do those who Forward me things they think are interesting; I usually find them to be droll at best.

Thank fuck for teh, otherwise I'd have to get a FB/Twitter account to post my BS. Which reminds me...

I remember Lynch posting here though. He was funny, in a I'm-glad-he's-on-the-other-side-of-the-pond kinda way.

This extreme tech forum sounds great. It even had a working awards structure too, then eh?

Vastly superior to Teh.

what? We had an amazing rewards system ourselves, Dragon Points! It was brilliant, you could earn and distribute points to people (for being helpful, or funny, or whatever) and as you built up points your dragon egg would hatch and a little dragon would grow. It all ended badly, as I recall - something about kilts and very dubious fiction about dragons with fair maidens.

I bet Extreme Tech wasn't that extreme.

Ahh, you guys busted his balls and he responded in a cowboy, I'll run the fuck over ye with a steamroller 'n shotgun blazin' sort of way.

You pretty much got what you gave, except in his usual style, Lynch tried to inspire discussion by making some fairly outrageous statements folks took too seriously. He was mostly taking the piss with you but it was taken too much to heart. He's actually a good chap, quite good as a Community Manager (and writer).
