Cool, I'll have a look on the SainSmart website when I get a chance. Not much use if they don't give you an email address but expect you to email them.

I'll have to find something I can practise soldering on before I try it on something in want to use. I have a kit from my birthday, a crawling bug that needs soldering too.

So... something you can use after washing it and removing the sticker? Is the sticker protecting something inside that can't get wet when it is washed? Is there a mogwai inside?

I think one is an active buzzer and the other is a passive buzzer. Not 100% sure about that though.

I read a nice tip on soldering a while back. Got any really old electronics? (radios, VCRs etc?) practice on them, desoldering and soldering parts.

I have a YouTube video bookmarked to watch when I get around to doing some soldering. An Australian guy who makes it look so easy. He recommended not using the pointy tips that come with irons but a wedge shaped instead.

I've got loads of stuff up the attic I can pull apart and try soldering with. Possibly some unsoldered points on circuit boards too.

Also I had a motherboard chopping board for Christmas :D

I can't solder unless the tip is really pointy.  I have one iron that is a split wedge and it forces you to learn how they suggest you do it because it won't turn on unless the solder is in the split.  The iron quickly earned backup status!

Not sure I've seen one of them.

Here is the tutorial I watched, if you're interested http://youtu.be/J5Sb21qbpEQ

I also had some cutters, solder, solder wick, tweezers, soldering mat and a stand with magnifying glass, light and arms to hold things.

so we've kind of gone a little fucking crazy to make up for it.

Gone?  :-B

Christmas was like that for me last year. Depressed at being 50 and out of work. No one wanted a 50 year-old. I just wasn't into it last year. Shouldn't be like that (my lack of spirit) I grant you, but I am only human (others do not agree). This year is a whole 'nuther story.  :-O~~~

They key to good soldering is a Clean Tip (yj). Heat the work and the solder gets applied to the hot work, not the hot tip. Doing it otherwise results, in most cases, a cold solder joint. Also, use a heat sink for delicate components.

Justice League Volume 4
Trinity War
Forever Evil

Turns out Volume 4 wasn't really necessary as I had some of it in single issues and the rest is covered in Trinity War (oops).

What was the walk out for?

It's a bit of a long story and probably too boring for anyone not in the family. Short version is my sister-in-law (Sue) doesn't get on with my Mum. Sue's fairly volatile when she wants to be and is very protective of her daughter (from a previous relationship). The daughter's very brash and seemingly gets away with murder. Anywho, on Christmas Day we'd told my eldest not to open a set of jigsaws belonging to his younger brother (they had tons of pieces and we didn't want them mixing up). While Clare and I were in the kitchen getting the pudding and white sauce ready, Sue's daughter decided she was going to play with them. My eldest got upset with her because he'd been told not to open them, my Mum told the daughter that Stephen (my youngest) should get to open them as they were his. Sue saw this as an excuse to blame my Mum, citing she'd been insulting the daughter. So when we were bringing up the pudding she was walking out of the door - no goodbye, reason or thanks for the meal. It really fecked us off. :-@ My brother hung around though and got thoroughly beaten at trivial pursuit by my 4 year old. :D

When I first tried soldering I had non idea what I was doing. Tried soldering a cable to an audio connector with the iron on the cable or connector with no joy. So I tried melting the solder instead and spreading it on the join. Not much luck with that.

if she left, and the daughter left, but the brother/husband/dad stayed, it seems like he knows the score

Try it again, but heat the work until you see some smoke (possibly about 15 seconds) then apply the solder to the work. Your soldering will improve with practice and it is much easier with 60/40 lead-based solder; I prefer it.

Yes, he might have even been grateful for the respite.  :-P
