Aye, and his tinkering taking-things-apart-to-see-how-they-work-nature (or at least that's my impression of his nature :Y )

And yeah I was using Ubuntu pretty much full time at home. Then I upgraded to 12.10 which is ... well, the graphics card support/drivers (proprietary) was totally broken so I retreated to windows. I should go back and stick 12.04 back on if it's not fixed.

And aye. Libre Office is ok but kinda clunky. On the rare instances when I need to do office stuff I just use Abiword and Gnumeric. But I don't need to do much.

Yep, I had X-Tree Gold as well. Mainly cos "File Manager" was pants and X-Tree was easier than directory manipulation directly in DOS.

Apparently
quote:
Computerworld, which has tracked usage patterns of Windows 8 in the months leading up to, and including, the launch, found that the new operating system "is being run by less than a fifth as many people as ran Windows 7 in the same months before its debut."

(you know, the more I use this new editor, the more I realise that it sucks donkey dick, this is a /major/ step back from the previous one on the usability front, I wonder if the retard who developed it was recruited onto the W8 team?)

Naah. If he was, you'd have to change between the editor options and the text editor and all the options for the text editor would be in huge square icons across your screen.

And you'd probably have to edit it in full screen mode.

So less geeks installed the preview releases? That could just be down to Win 7 being good as opposed to Win 8 being bad. People were more satisfied than those either labouring with ancient XP or getting annoyed with Vista.

A reasonable hypothesis, yes. As, indeed, people are more likely to mention when things are bad, than when things are working well. The corollary is that when people don't vociferously proclaim their satisfaction with something, it gets changed. Like teh text editor, the previous one was fine, while this one SUCKS BALLS.

Indeed. That's the problem. If Windows 8 flops, it'll be hard to tell if it's just whether people think it's shit, or because they're happy with 7. Personally from my point of view, it's a combination of the two. And Windows 7 is only 3 years old and I'm hoping that Windows 9 can iron out Windows 8's rough edges. Until then, I'll take a smooth Windows 7 over a rough-edged Windows 8.

But didn't Vista flop? And was that because it sucked or because XP was so great, or a combination of the two? (hint: Microsoft delayed the EOL for XP and extended the support period)

Vista flopped - and mainly because it was shite (cue a couple of people rising to defend it).

Let's face it, It wasn't radically different from XP from a user interface point of view (start menu, desktop, all "check"). Furthermore, there had been a wait of over 5 years since XP was released (longest in the history of Windows). The world was ready for a new version of Windows, just not for the sluggish, buggy and annoying turd that was Vista. And let's face it, it was Vista's crap reputation which sank it, not because everyone suddenly started praising XP as being the best thing since sliced bread!

For Windows 8, it's a different story. Windows 7 was only released 3 years ago and for some people, they've only just finished upgrading to it (especially for businesses). The need for a new version of Windows is less, and this is likely to affect adoption rates - regardless of how good or bad Windows 8 is. We've no plans to move to Windows 8 where I work, but that's mainly because I'm still busy removing the last straggling XP machines.

That's a pain in the arse, though.

Are there any features or capabilities that are indisputably better than Windows 7? Have they got that fancy new file system they've been going on about since Vista sorted yet?

True enough, but the analogy between XP/Visa and W7/W8 still stands. Vista flopped not just because it was buggy, but because XP was good enough. In the case of W8 it's not necessarily bugginess that stands in its way but the UI or 'fear of the unknown'. And W7 is still good enough.

The disparity between XP and Vista may well be greater than that between W7 and W8 though, so yeah rock'n'roll.

You can get Angry Birds: Star Wars for it in the Store. And Pinball FX 2. And it does start up and shut down very rapidly, and I really quite like the Start Screen, but you need to invest some time in learning keyboard shortcuts and that. Which you should anyway. Mouses are for WIMPs. LOL.

Happy now?

I think Windows 8 is not targeting the enterprise. Microsoft are well aware that Windows 7 either still is being, or has only recently been, rolled out in most large companies, achieving the aim of getting them off XP. So it's a good time to play catch-up in the consumer market, give OEMs a damn good reason to make PCs and devices with touch-screens, give developers a year or so to get to grips with WinRT and Metro and touch and all that, roll out half-yearly 8.x updates, and do Windows 9 some time in 2014 with a more convincing story for corporate customers.

Happy now?
