pretty sure (without having tried it) you can do it but might need the Win 7 serial.

According to the FAQ, no:
quote:
Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

I read somewhere that XP-SP3 was the minimum base OS.

Thing is, does Win 8 disqualify it? Also you can choose to do a standalone install of the upgrade somehow as well. Apparently.

Must admit, I've not tried Server 2012 yet. I'll probably do so soon at work as we should be getting a new server soon and I want to play with the new Hyper-V on it (and Server 2012) before doing anything serious with it.

Right, now I can actually post again, my moaning colonial friend, I'd like to direct you to this.

I have purchased Windows 8 for the princely sum of £14.99 or $87.35 in your foreign coin and it'll be going on my new pc build in the near future. This is following some time with it in a test lab at work. I can agree with the fact that it's an, at times, nasty mix of touchscreen holdovers but generally I like it and the way Metro works.

That's a pretty poor excuse for "talk of the Start Menu returning". A guy from Stardock, who have sold "tens of thousands" of Start Menu buttons to a potential market of millions of users, and a bunch of industry analysts speculating that Sinofsky's departure signals the return of last year's UX. Not a particularly convincing case there from that hard-hitting bastion of up-to-the-second tech news, USA Today.

Happy now?

You could also look at it like this:  If the USA Today is reporting it, it must be a big story.

You'll all soon see that I'm correct and you are all /wrong/.

Nope me either, on a touch device it's not too shabby.

Which bit were they wrong about exactly? The removal of the start menu?

That and pushing metro on enterprise.  Metro is great for touch based devices, but it will /never/ work for enterprise.  I said /never/!  :)

You see, I think Metro isn't so bad for enterprise. It's like have a desktop with specific widgets on it. I do dislike 'corners' though.

Yeah, and the corners are even tougher on multi-monitors and RDP.  It's not that Metro is bad really, but no one cares when they are at work.  There are days upon days that I never see my desktop, and others have excel or Great Plains or whatever opened all day, they don't care about live tiles.  But they do care when they try to open a program and have to navigate a poorly implemented start screen, when it just to be as easy as clicking start/windows button and picking what you want.

So if it's the same, why is it now different?  What is better about pressing the keyboard key?  Why change it?  It was fine.  And the only tiles you see are the ones you don't even want to see.

You can re-arrange the icons. Have you not tried doing that? Also, clicking in the bottom-left corner of the screen brings the Start window up.

I have not, because I'm not using the rubbish.  Oh wait, I suddenly love Windows 8 now.  So carry on, while I enjoy the fantastic changes!

I think we're just having a few problems working out why you keep complaining about bits of Windows 8 not doing things that they actually can do.

Where do I keep complaining about it?  I think if look you'll see that over and over I keep saying they've changed things just to change them and didn't put any thought into it.  There is nothing better about Windows 8 for desktop/laptop.
