In what is, I'm sure, a wholly unrelated event, Steven Sinofsky, head of the Windows division at Microsoft, has left 'with immediate effect'.

"With immediate effect", that's a euphamism for "don't left the door slam your butt on the way out", isn't it?

Apparently he'd been threatening to do so for some time if he wasn't given Ballmer's job.

Smart man right there.  GTFO before the shit storm that is Windows 8 really hits!

And why are all the media outlets calling Windows 8 key to Microsoft's future?  I seem to recall them recovering just fine from a previous turd that was Vista.

He certainly has the hair for it.

And Ken, recovery from a second turd so soon after the previous one might be more problematic.

So it looks like I might be the voice of reason here after all (while still being insane).  Microsoft fires the guy in charge of Windows and now there is talk of the start menu returning.  I am all for change if it improves things, but I'll say it again, you don't just change things for the fun of it. Especially when it's a staple that everyone in the world knows and understands how to use.

Ummm, yes, that's pretty much what I said in #113.

And I agree, change for the better is a good thing, but you have to balance that against alienating your audience (not all of whom are technodweebs like this bunch).

Sorry, I didn't intend to post that directly to you.  It was just a general post.

err, tech blog in "making shit up" shocker.

I can't believe you're still so cross about that menu though. I barely remember using it now, it's much quicker to just start typing what I want or click a shortcut.

Haha I just noticed at the end they quote somebody pointing out that the whole preceding part of the article is almost certainly bullshit!

"Wes Miller, an industry analyst at independent research firm Directions on Microsoft, says Sinofsky's sudden exit probably has more to do with personalities than any specific product flaws.

Miller points out that Sinofsky's replacement, Julie Larson-Green, actually directed the revamping of the user interface for Windows 8.

"She spiritually led much of the start screen work for Windows 8," says Miller. "So much about this decision is personality and the direction of the company moving forward -- and not really any explicit product-related decisions."

It's because they completely changed it, and IMO not for the better.  I always click start and type.  How is it any better in 8?  Don't you have to press the windows button and type?

You can just type I think. Certainly in the start screen you hate so much.

so if you don't use the start menu why do you miss it so?

I do use it, and it's organized logically.  The start screen is not.  But the benefit of typing isn't lost when using 7.  If you can just type then it saves a click, if not then it's the same.

You can just type unless you are in something that would make that a bad idea like an app with typing.

And the start screen can be organised entirely to your preference too.

Well, it's better in many ways - live tiles with info, more customisable in appearance and generally nicer looking anyway, more suited to modern big displays, that sort of thing.

Now, now.  I am not against change at all.  I actually like it, I really like Server 2012 for the most part.  But to be productive this doesn't help, it hinders.  But on a tablet or phone I think it looks really good.

I wish there was a way to try Phone 8 on my S3.

Are you still using it? Cos if you are, you need to stop. Ad if you aren't, you need to stop getting wound up by it.

With regards to that Windows Upgrade Offer, since it's assuming you'll have Windows 7 on the qualifying computer, will the upgrade still work if I'm currently running one of the pre-release versions of Windows 8? Or would I have to first reinstall Windows 7 on my computer, and then do the upgrade?
