They work fine, they're just not very performant and are bugy and crashy and don't get on well with some other linux components. If you only do 2d acceleration then I /think/ the open source (Nouvea) drivers are about as good (may be wrong about this).

Re. Next 360, yes it will. Still suprising the current gen is a bastardisation version of the 2k platform, but was and still is the metro w8 style os.

I read it on one of the dev blogs somewhere, unified branding with Win 8 being the backbone.

And hello, I've not been on Steam as much, but have been on here. Real life crap to deal with. Have to game sometime.

Oh, just on the folders subject: in the bottom right corner of the Start screen should be a small box with a "-" in it. Click on that, then right-click on the groups that you've organised your icons into. That should give you the option to name the groups.

I'd try it either in a separate partition or on a spare PC first. It's a tricky one. If you can either look past the flaws or get used to them, you may like it. On the other hand, you may use it and then come to the conclusion of "Well done MS, you've totally fucked that one up".

I'm interested in hearing about his experience.

Do you have any Server 2012 machines yet?  I'm noticing a strange permissions issue with IIS, and wondering if it's just something I've done wrong or if it's a bug.

In what is, I'm sure, a wholly unrelated event, Steven Sinofsky, head of the Windows division at Microsoft, has left 'with immediate effect'.

"With immediate effect", that's a euphamism for "don't left the door slam your butt on the way out", isn't it?

Apparently he'd been threatening to do so for some time if he wasn't given Ballmer's job.

Smart man right there.  GTFO before the shit storm that is Windows 8 really hits!

And why are all the media outlets calling Windows 8 key to Microsoft's future?  I seem to recall them recovering just fine from a previous turd that was Vista.

He certainly has the hair for it.

And Ken, recovery from a second turd so soon after the previous one might be more problematic.

So it looks like I might be the voice of reason here after all (while still being insane).  Microsoft fires the guy in charge of Windows and now there is talk of the start menu returning.  I am all for change if it improves things, but I'll say it again, you don't just change things for the fun of it. Especially when it's a staple that everyone in the world knows and understands how to use.

Ummm, yes, that's pretty much what I said in #113.

And I agree, change for the better is a good thing, but you have to balance that against alienating your audience (not all of whom are technodweebs like this bunch).

err, tech blog in "making shit up" shocker.

I can't believe you're still so cross about that menu though. I barely remember using it now, it's much quicker to just start typing what I want or click a shortcut.

Haha I just noticed at the end they quote somebody pointing out that the whole preceding part of the article is almost certainly bullshit!

"Wes Miller, an industry analyst at independent research firm Directions on Microsoft, says Sinofsky's sudden exit probably has more to do with personalities than any specific product flaws.

Miller points out that Sinofsky's replacement, Julie Larson-Green, actually directed the revamping of the user interface for Windows 8.

"She spiritually led much of the start screen work for Windows 8," says Miller. "So much about this decision is personality and the direction of the company moving forward -- and not really any explicit product-related decisions."
