If there's one thing that's really impressed me about Skyrim, iot's the Dungeon design.

Every time I enter Ruins/Caves/Forts, I'm not really sure what to expect, both in terms of enemy composition, layout and difficulty, which I really enjoy.

Look at the verticality of this - up and down.

As you can see, this is a Dwemer Ruin, for a Enchanter/Smith like me, I'm in heaven as I'm getting jewels, Dwarwen Ore and Soul Gems a-gogo.

There have instances of deathrap dungeons too - when you get in, you can't get out which I've had to change my play style to survive.

The biggest criticsm I've seen levelled is that the dungeons are linear experiences, which I suppose is valid enough but for the quantity of them in the game It's a touch harsh to pick fault with it.

The level design is nice. The price being standard un-alterable running speed and jumping height (and no levitation).

I'm starting to hit the edges of this game. It's very very broad (compared to Oblivion) but incredibly shallow. The questlines are very trivial and short, if fairly well constructed.

Morrowind had the breadth and the depth. But I guess making a game like that these days is impossible. It's just more intensive when textures and models are high res and dialogue must be spoken. This is the best we get.

It's a very good game, even stunning in places. But it's very firmly an action-RPG rather than... whatever Morrowind is.

It's not supposed to be scary, it's supposed to be cute.

If you're aiming for scary it isn't :-D

If you're aiming for cute, well, you suceeded in creepy :-D

Morrowind didn't do it for me I'm afraid. Other than the water it was graphically dull.. no, depressing is a better way to put it.

It's possible I might go back and play it now and enjoy it more I suppose.

It's the style, not the colours.

'Tis fucking depressing.

I agree about Skyrim btw but I think it's a massive step in the right direction.

Actually, thinking about it, it reminds me of Elite with mountains.

Mount & Blade is more Elite with mountains.

Actually in terms of quality of design, Skyrim is as good as Morrowind (and, of course, way better than Oblivion).

Definitely a step in the right direction from Oblivion, aye. Just wish it was a bit more fleshed out.

Speaking of water, I was wandering around the northern area among the icebergs yesterday. Sometimes, I hit a bug where the water is completely clear, and standing on the bottom of the sea looking up at the icebergs floating in what looked like the sky made me want a game like that.

Then I'd start drowning and have to swim for the surface as quickly as possible.

But why? I can never quite put my finger on why it was a load of old horse apples. I even tried it with Obsuro's Total Mod (I think it was called)

Surface wise, it was the same as Skyrim right down to having a shite UI.

I had a bug early on that made a whole section of lake disapear - it was stll there but you couldn't see it, just the bottom, was rather bizarre.

Oblivion's UI was amazing compared to Skyrim's :')

Oblivion was shit because it was badly designed. Nothing (well, very little) was interesting or intriguing or mysterious and the whole thing looked like a jumbled mess. Nothing had any coherence with anything else. Didn't look like stuff which had arisen from a real culture, looked like stuff that had been badly designed.

Morrowind was broad and deep and well designed. Oblivion was narrow and shallow and poorly designed. Skyrim is broad and shallow and well designed. Two out of three is pretty good.
