The 4 pins around the flat bit are the analog signal. The clump to the right of that are the digital signal for Link 1, and the gap is where the pins for the digital signal for Link 2 would be if that was a dual-link cable.

 

The DVI socket in that photo is digital-only, meaning it has no hardware behind it to receive an analog signal.

 

You'll need to use a DVI-VGA adaptor widget, or get new digital-only DVI cables. Or if you're really sure the computer and monitor both support digital-only, break the analog pins off the cable.

Meaning an adapter is worthless. If I wanted to go from that DVI port to VGA it wouldn't display a thing on the monitor.

I am now very screwed because the monitors only have VGA ports and I have no way to hook up duals. Very nice job Acer fucks.

I suppose, but In 30 years I've never come across a computer that didn't use the DVD-I ports. Other than these obviously. It makes no sense not to use them. What is the benefit of limiting that port to only digital when it is capable of both?

Well, call me Susan, but isn't that a VGA port directly below the DVI port in your photo? Lots of PCs these days have dual output graphics cards, but only one of them is an analogue output. Means that you don't need two digital to analogue converters on the card and this saves money. I've seen PCs with a VGA and a DVI-D, and PCs with a DVI-I and a DVI-D. Give it a few more years and the DVI-Is and VGAs will start disappearing altogether!

Not sure I follow you. But yes each PC has a VGA and a DVI-D. But the monitors only have VGA ports.

So I can't power dual monitors without a converter or a video card added in. I suppose I could be blamed for this oversite, but I've honestly never come across something like this.

We are moving to a paperless system and all documents will be viewed by computer. They wanted one for documents, one for the software we use.

Ahh, I gets you. Of course, the other question is why on earth you're still buying (in 2011) monitors with only VGA ports. All the ones I've bought for the last 5 years or more have had both VGA and DVI ports on them - and that includes the cheap ones at work!

 

Still, looks like your only options are to replace some of the monitors with DVI supporting screens, or buy some graphics cards which support dual analogue outputs.

I was working with a company and just told them the size I needed. It never crossed my mind that they wouldn't have both ports on them.
