I have no idea if it's the same here as there, but if you use a Credit Card online the CC company usually works with you and returns your money. If, however, you use a Debit Card your bank doesn't have to do that and sometimes you are SOL. So, here at least, you should always use a CC when paying for stuff online.

I hate abbreviation.

I think it is similar here but even in debit cards you can tell your bank you didn't make that transaction and get what they call a Chargeback initiated. Unless it's Chip 'n's Pin.

Sorry. Sol is standard around here!

A bank usually does that here but they don't have to.

Over here Visa have a "Visa Debit Chargeback" scheme that banks have to offer their Visa debit card customers. If they don't they can't use the Visa services. It offers similar protection to credit card fraud, with a few exceptions, but it's basically the same.

I know Mastercard also offer a similar scheme for their debit cards but I don't know what they call it or what it offers.

Would be worth checking if such schemes are available in the US too.

And things get worse.

Now SOE (PC MMO developer and server operator of EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, etc.) is offline.

quote: IGN
"We had to temporarily take down SOE services during the night," a spokesperson said. "In the course of our investigation into the intrusion of our systems, we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern. We will provide an update later today."

No timetable was provided for when the services will be turned back on. Sony Online Entertainment hosts several massively multiplayer titles, including: DC Universe Online, the Everquest series, Freerealms, Star Wars Galaxies, and Planetside.

In a message to its customers, Sony said: "We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company."

However, it added that "on 1 May we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen".

Sony was quoted by the Associated Press (AP) news agency as saying that the latest incident occurred on 16 and 17 April.

This was earlier than the larger Playstation user security breach.

Apparently it adds another 25m accounts to the haul.

They don't really need Anonymous, do they? They can demolish whatever reputation they ever had without external assistance.

Indeed. Yet another reason added to the already long list of reasons why I do not do business with Sony. They're a joke!

It's really hard to tell with Microsoft. They don't seem to take advantage of their opportunities when they should at times.

I was really pulling for Sony too, because I like the idea of their gaming network being free. I hate paying for Live.
