there was 'unofficial'* beta release 1 a few days ago then there was 'unofficial' beta release 2 just a couple of days ago now 1.8 is officially released to everyone and 1.9 is on the way! *'unofficial' despite it being released by a member of the development team and linked to from the minecraft.net site Jon

I guess it doesn't check the servers you use because you could be using many different ones.

I also updated without thinking about it but using Ant's bin folder asks me again if I want to update which I said no to.
