If the noise coming from certain corners of the net is to be believed this is best avoided until the official release. There's such a huge number of changes in 1.8, I reckon it's not going to work correctly until at least 1.8.4.

there was 'unofficial'* beta release 1 a few days ago then there was 'unofficial' beta release 2 just a couple of days ago now 1.8 is officially released to everyone and 1.9 is on the way! *'unofficial' despite it being released by a member of the development team and linked to from the minecraft.net site Jon
