I can enable or disable commands as required. Using the Groups function of hmod. At least I can do all that in theory. Need to reread the stuff now I have a better understanding of how hmod works.

That's true, I tend to be building when I change it. Now I know how to cheat and build a bit easier I think I should build something a bit more substantial!
