Can I be vegetarian, or are the cute pigs the only food source? :(

Also, is there an in-game way to figure out what things are and what can be built?

I don't want to watch tutorials or read references - I want to work it out myself, (but whilst still having a slight clue of what I might aim for).

trial and error. It is very alpha! if you do a 'survive your first night' tutorial and no more, I guess that will give you indications of the logic it uses and you might be able to figure out lots more of what you can build.

Yeah, that's basically what I did - watched a first night thing, then a couple more.

It'd be nice to know a slight bit more though - stuff as simple as what new material I've just created in the furnace - without finding out everything.

Oh well, I'll experiment a bit more then.

I guess the wiki can show you materials without showing how to do other stuff? Might be showing too much of what else you can get if you really want the mystery.

Make a hoe (n, j) by putting two sticks up the middle on a workbench crafting square and two [plank/rock/iron/diamond], one in the top middle and one to the side of that one.

Use this hoe to hoe grassy tiles, which will occasionally result in seeds popping out. Now, make yourself a little farm plot by hoeing some more grass in a place where you want to grow some stuff. Now plant your seeds in those prepared tiles and eventually you will get a wheat crop. Wheat can be harvested and then made into bread.

Some notes: You'll need to keep animals off your fields as they will trample your crops (as will you, and walking over hoed ground too much makes it revert back to normal mud). The crops will grow best if they're near a water tile, I forget what the range is so play around. But they'll grow without water, just slower.

You can also make mushroom soup but you need to collect mushrooms for that.

edit: to use a hoe you right click on the tile rather than left clicking (which will just dig).

This is why I like this game. I'd been stuck at my spawn point after dying and losing loads of ore, it was very annoying. Now I couldn't get back to my ikea laden cave dwelling because of baddies in my way. It felt just like a platform game and I'd got to that point where it was annoying. So I stopped in my spawn point and waited, and right in front of me the most amazing sunset appears with the square clouds just whisping over, it was lovely!

After that a few pigs could be punched on the way home and I got home safely!

DAY 2 TOMORROW

Y'know, we had a similar view the other day. Driving back from Canterbury there was mist over the Weald, and a gorgeous sunset.

The only difference being that THIS WAS FUCKING REAL MAN!

Yesterday I got lost and ended up cowering in a cave which I'd dug out. I had no torches so sat in dark all through the night. Just as the sun was coming up I realised I'd been staring at iron ore all night. Went to go get it and realised it wasn't iron ore at all and was then killed by a creeper :(

The spawning and losing your inventory thing is a bloody nightmare, fun though.

You don't lose your inventory, you drop it - all the stuff is still there, if you're quick enough getting back to that area.

Creepers are evil though... they should at least give a small amount of noise when moving. :(

I need lots of sulphur to make some explosives to hollow out a big area, so I'm going to have to go Creeper hunting, which I'm not looking forward to.

Ahh. Well, I have a terrible sense of direction in real life and even worse in games. How do I build an Android phone with Google Maps?

Good thing to do is when you've mined some stuff you don't want to lose, make a chest and put the stuff in it. Then, if you're above ground, build a big tower so you can find the chest later.
