27901.1

I've got my nice new LinkStation Network Hard Drive, but when I go to copy files over, it hangs for a few mins, and I get an error back telling me it cant move / copy because the path is too deep.
WTF?!

The directory structure is do deep (folder within folder within folder within folder)

I think there is a limit to how deep a structure can be when moving or copying.

I think the restriction is a 256 bit path length or something. If one of the folders is "Aldress's folder where he puts stuff that might not necessarily (or is it necessaraly - no I think I was right the first tme) fit in to the well thought out folder structure in the other folders lol does my bum look big in this folder rolf etc." it wouldn't help.

yeah, that's what I thought. How do I get around it?
It's a network drive, so I can't make the address any smaller! The main file folder is already mapped to B:\ - and that's where I'm tying to put the files, so going by that, the directory is onlt 3 characters long!

I've seen it a few times. Something about it actually going through Documents and Settings before getting there. Does it involve a shortcut on the desktop?

the file, for instance, is on my desktop, but have tried it from the C:\ root
I've tried it on a different PC, and it was fine!
I'm wondering if it's anything to do with the network setup?
My setup is...

adsl router plugged into an ethernet switch. Plugged into this is a) the network drive and b) the wireless gateway.

When i try doing it from the wirless laptop, error occurs. When i try doing it from a wired desktop (plugged directly into the switch) it works.

If so, what can i have as a workaround? I can't think of anyway of wiring it that doesn't involve buying more hardware (which aint going to happen).

I do have a wireless router, which I can't use as a router (no modem in it). I used to use it as a gateway, until I got a proper one.

I mentioned something about this the other day; would I be able to have the wirless router (as a gateway) elsewhere in the house, with the drive attached to that?

Hi. I runned into that problem too. And after days of searching I finally found this software: Delete Long Path File Tool.

It's GREAT. You can find it here: http://pathtoodeep.com

A little better but there's still loads of white space top and bottom of the actual image.

I thought you were being mean like Ant. I don't know who to believe now. Too much white space, not enough. I'll just take the damn thing off!

Nooo! Leave it on.

Just add a gap above his head, so it doesn't look hunched over in a cave when there's text above.

Or right align it would work too.
