Oh dear, it looks like Rogue Warrior may be worth every one of the 124 pennies I paid, and not one more.

It shall have to be played for laffs moreso than thrills.  :O)

Here are some of the reviews:

Quote:
The season is too full of top-notch games and excellent DLC for you to spend your cash on this stinker.
Quote:
The really smart thing is to quit out early, uninstall it and play damn near anything else instead.
Quote:
This dreadfully boring, expletive-filled, extremely short shooter is an absolute rip-off.
(on a plus note, it's Mickey Rourke of Sin City does all the swearing)

Quote:
This has got to be the most disappointing purchase I have ever made in my entire life.
Quote:
Completely bankrupt of any value whatsoever.

All handily compiled here http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/rogue-warrior

Anyhoo, I dl & installed it last night so will essay its fifteen minutes of glory tonight.  (taboo)

I just watched some walk-throughs on youtube, and it looks almost as crudely stupid as Soldier of Fortune -- a game I thoroughly enjoyed and replayed obsessively for many months. I wonder if this has anything like SoF's g.h.o.u.l. system.

Played about ~half hour on Friday night. Not quite as terrible as advertised and yes, there were moments of combat tension mainly thanks to the dubious 'advantage' of faulty weapon responses and limited ammo. You are (so far) limited to just two weapons (initially a silenced pistol and SMG) plus grenades which I kept inadvertently tossing by clicking the RMB, hoping this would bring up the gun sights for better aim (this is done with the space bar, I guess I could customize otherwise). Therre is an ample supply of soviet weapons dropped by dead enemies or left lying about in caches that you can pick up, including sniper rifles and HMG. The aim of the weapons is very hit or miss, and frequently the guns fail to fire when clicked. Interesting. After becoming more accustomed to these limitations (dying several times in the process), I was able to efficiently slaughter most enemies. There is a stealth feature which you sneak up on an enemy it switches to third-person view and you watch yourself execute the victim by various brutal methods. Basically the enemies wait to die with their backs turned, unless alerted by gunfire. The graphics are a notch better than SoF, not so good as L4D. 3/10, will play some more and see how it goes. Not too surprisingly, it lacks the shlocktacular violence and marvelous shrieks, shouts and gurgles of SoF kills.

I quite liked SoF as well when it was released, I remember the throwing knives were quite fun. I don't recall the graphics looking so blocky though, but I guess that's the rose tinted nostalgia of yesterday. Plus my glasses are more powerful now, so maybe I'm seeing things with literally more clarity.

Heh, I used to have a cheap and dirty trick for for aliased games that negated the need to upgrade to the next fancy GFX card - just take my glasses off and all of a sudden no jagged edges. :) I can't do that nowadays though, I wouldn't be able to read any text smaller than 72pt :C

You /really/ need glasses.

As far as throwing knives, Dead Island is in a class by itself. You can even play as a blade specialist, for whom blade weapons are both more deadly, and come back to your hand like a boomerang. Also you can apply poison to any bladed weapon, which is very effective against "thugs", because it makes them pause their attack and puke, during which they can be easily despatched.

I've been thinking of going back to that game. I was enjoying it, then got to an area and task that seemed impossible, I kept getting swarmed by the horde and couldn't get away. As I tried to get away, the weapons I had all kept breaking and I ended up trying to punch/kick my way out. Which was about as successful as you can imagine.

I've played through the main campaign and completed it using the Sam B character.

I enjoyed it more towards the end, the jungle and lab area was probably the best part of the game. I started playing the Ryder White DLC and quit about an hour in. Though the gameplay's the same, the levels have some game affecting bugs that the main game didn't. There's a part where you have to go through the sewers again, which have a /lot/ of the infected present. Unfortunately they seem to respawn while you're still in the area and end up swamping you with barely any respite. The glitch that made me quit was while walking through a narrow area I found a thug, so was about to run in with sharp things swinging when 4 infected spawned out of nowhere literally right in front of me. I've never liked respawning enemies in games like this, and to do it so blatantly is a mahoosive faux pas.

The DLC was ok but didn't really add anything to the main campaign. I've played through DI and DIR a couple of times, now I've got Sam B basically maxed out with all the best ("gold") modded weapons and $$$ (3M and counting ATM), I just roam all over the map killing zombies at will. It's best to attack hordes with explosives (the sonic grenade is the most effective) before they even see you, firearms are very effective at medium-close range against all comers especially when modded with fire/shocks, and the auto sniper-rifle at a distance. The melee weapons are the most fun and can be effective against hordes provided you don't let yourself get surrounded, and have space to back up. Oh yeah, indoors (warehouses, basements etc) where you are more likely to encounter mixed hordes of zombies, thugs and worse, you can kill many through the bars with firearms, open doors and toss in grenades and molotovs then close the door. Always carry huge supplies of explosives.
