Portable photo backup thing

Anyone know of a device that has a hard drive in it (or preferably one I can put a hard drive in) where you plug in an SD card, press a button and it copies the contents of the card to the hard drive?

I feel like I've seen such a device in the past.

The other option being a tablet/phone, USB hub, USB hard drive, USB SD card reader and do it that way.

You're not imagining things - such devices definitely exist(s|ed).

Searching wex for "hard drive sd card" produced one result - Western Digital Passport option that may be okay?

Can't find any others... ok, a bit more searching found a "NextoDI ND2901" which has more features including previewing images and (probably) replaceable 9.5mm 2.5" SATA.

A bit of proper searching also brought up those. There's a number of devices out there but I believe they're unfortunately far too expensive for what I'm looking for.

I guess a lot of them are aimed at the pro photography market and therefore £££.

I'd prefer to be detached, but I suppose something like the Kingston MobileLite Wireless G3 is an option then plug in a USB hard drive.

If only you had some sort of small computing platform, a hard drive, an sd card reader and a 3d printer.

Wouldn't be cheaper, easier & more portable to buy a few big sd cards?

Yes, but I imagined a more robust enclosure :C

Storage isn't the issue, I've already got too many SD cards. I want a way to backup on the move. Main reason is that I'm going on holiday in June and will be taking a lot of photos and like the idea of having a backup once I fill an SD card.

If I could do SD to SD I guess that could be a reasonable way considering the amount I have. I should be able to do that with the RPi setup.

Yeah I understood the backup part. I wonder if there's such a thing as an sd card duplicator.

Edit: just remembered my phone has an sd card slot. So you'd just need an OTG adaptor cable, sd card reader (not sure if you'd need a powered hub for it)*, and (maybe) file mgt app (I use File Manager HD).

Swap in new card(s) as it/they fill up.

*or one of these

I think I'm going to try the Pi Zero option (since I own one that hasn't been used since I bought it months ago :$ )

Ordered some bits, cheapo micro USB OTG hub and a few adapters and such. If I need to I'll go down the phone/tablet route but I like the idea of booting up the Pi, plugging in a hard drive, then the memory card and it happening automatically.

Just 3D printed a case for it too, but I can't seem to get the photo to upload.

> once I fill an SD card.

Fill an SD card? :?

You either have too many megapixels and/or too few megabytes.

Realistically I probably won't be filling one quickly, even though I'll be shooting RAW+JPG but it would be good to be able to backup everything each day.

Had a play with ... https://github.com/dmpop/little-backup-box ... on my Pi Zero W and it works nicely.

A few tweaks and adding lighttpd, h5ai (html file browser), samba, and eventually hostapd I think it will be a really nice little setup.
