Free Win 10 for Pierats

So we already knew Win 10 was going to be free for the first year (a sensible decision to try and get people to actually move up from Win 7), but now they've said it will also be free for JIMLAD copies.

Might upgrade my Desktop as it's decided it's not genuine (even though I'm pretty sure it has a genuine license, just perhaps not genuinely /my/ license...)

Free with a Mac?

yeah they don't make it available so easily for Hackintoshes I don't think.

They did make the iWork suite upgrade pirate copies and trials to the full one quite recently though, that was nice. Not sure the trial thing was actually meant to happen!

Or to upgrade. Which is essentially what most people would be doing with Win10 anyway.

But to get OSX in the first place you'd need to buy a mac?

I think you can buy it on a dvd off the shelf at an apple store, without having to prove you own a mac.

Fair enough, but it's not free like Linux as Mr Bastard seemed to be implying.

I don't understand your point. You still need a fucking computer to run Linux. They don't grow on fucking trees, although perhaps in Manchester they get 'liberated' for nothing.

The point is: Linux is (largely) free, but you need a computer to run it (see above); Windows 10 will be free, although you need a computer to run it; OS X is also free, although you need a computer to run it. You may have to buy the computer first (or the parts and self-build in some cases); the PC/parts may cost money.

Please don't confuse Liverpool and Manchester.

Xen was saying Linux is free, as in you can go and download it for free right now. No money has to change hands to get Linux. Free.

You said, so is OS X. But it isn't, you either need to buy a Mac to get it included or as Smithy said, you might be able to /buy/ it from an Apple store. I don't see how you can legally aquire OS X without spending any money. Therefore, not free.

The cost of "free" os x development is factored into the premium-priced hardware. This is why Apple is dead set against people trying to run it on non-apple hardware. Foolishly IMO.

I am currently running OS X Mavericks. I can get the upgrade to Yosemite from the App Store. I do not have to pay money for it. My hardware is old (yj).

Did you have to buy a Mac to get OS X Mavericks?

I'm not doubting there's a free upgrade. It's just not free to get to that point and can't be compared to Linux as being free.

You already paid for it.
