RAID design

This is related to my question about NAS + networking.

It has been suggested putting two main categories of files (images and everything else) on separate volumes. Does that make sense performance-wise, given it's all going through the same cable?

Dunno if it matters, but we have up to 6 simultaneous users on the NAS, but usually it's 2 or 3.

The TS-451 has four bays: 2 x RAID 1, RAID 6, what?

If you're on gigabit then surely the limiting factor is the drive speed? I assume you're it using SSDs...

Is "it" scotch for "not"? If so then yes, I am not using SSDs*. That being the case... RAID 1/6/what ?

*actually, I am not using anything ATM, since we don't have the NAS, or the drives to go in it. Yet.

Looks like it's going to be RAID10.

That's probably the best choice.

RAID 11. Because 11 is more than 10.

(RAID "10" is really RAID 1+0)

is raid 11 really 2+0?

Raid 11 is just an extra notch on the dial that doesn't actually do anything.

Why not just have raid 10 do the same as 11 and then you wouldn't need it!

There's a technical explanation for it on Spinal Tap The Movie. I'm afraid it's over my head though.

Yeah, but 11 is more than 10.

That bit is classic.  I don't really think he knows what he means when he's explaining it.

Is that 0+2+0+0+4*2?
