I was in the mood for something utterly undemanding the other night, and this film piqued my interest. Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza in what was billed as a dark comedy about the manager of an American Italian-themed chain restaurant (thinly-disguised Olive Garden) who gets sent on a management course in Italy, where a slightly dubious romance with the head of the restaurant company ensues, facilitated by Plaza's character. It was directed by Aubrey Plaza's husband (who, I've since found out, is no longer with us).
It did not work at all. It was not funny enough on any level to be a comedy. It was not thrilling enough to be a thriller. It was not satirical enough to be a satire. It was not romantic enough (or at all) to be a romance. The power dynamics of the "romance" were not investigated. The supporting characters were incredibly annoying, especially the "comedy" sidekick ones. It all built up to a surreal final act through little hints throughout, but by that time, I was utterly bored of it that I didn't care.
Utter shite. Not even a "so bad it's good" film - just utter shite.
