Bear in mind it's a one-play job (though they've just announced a DLC that neatly plays off the ending (You should avoid any discussion of the ending as it's massive spoiler territory, which will also necessitate avoiding reading the details of the DLC. Fuck. Play Primal instead. But Valley of the Yeti DLC first).

Are you sure about that? I've seen some youtubes of user-made FC5 maps + missions that look ok.

Yeah, I was just talking about the core game. I can't imagine I'll ever play it again (though I'd quite like to polish my fishing skills, which I never really got the hang of - but I can do that perfectly well in the post game sandbox).  The Vietnam total conversion DLC looks like it might be fun.

Yeah I like the looks of the 'Nam dlc, though it's extra cost.

I'm leaning towards the purchase, with the 20% discount it's very close to the price in the thread title. Will hold off another day or two to ponder... what's the sandbox like? FC3's is ace, at least with the mod I put on it. I still play it quite a bit, even though FC4 is slowly edging it out.

Edit:

This review sez the 'nam dlc is worth it, the zombie not (and TBH, it looks like a pimped-out L4D2)

The sandbox is a bit limp because the core game ending moves the goalposts significantly. Nuff said.

OK... Hmmm, VotY DLC is on sale for six bucks. ubi store checkout not working atm  :-(

Bought FC4 through Humble instead of ubi store could explain that.

VotY is ~Can.$17 on steam, so I'll pass on that for now. This is starting to look like FC5 by default...

OTOH https://www.gog.com/game/dying_light_the_following_enhanced_edition  :-O

I figger after 4, I'll be ready to give the FC universe a rest* and go back into the Dead Island [-ish] universe...

Dying Light The Following FTW.**

*I'll likely check out VotY when a suitable discount pops up.

** and with the purchase I got two free gog games: Fantasy General, a stupid, $1.99 retro game that I will never play, and Everspace, a $32.99 space blaster that looks like it could be kind of fun.

You mean I have to re-read the thread? Pah, I've been through it once and if it didn't stand out then, it's not worth looking back.  :-@

I'm starting a replay through FC4, the intro story makes a lot more sense after a play through.

I'll be doing a replay on 'hard' difficulty, right now I'm redoing base caps with different load outs.

Whalp, curiosity got the better of me so I started in on 5. First off it had to install a ton of D3d and dotnet whatnots (alarmingly a "Windows 8.1 update"), then it rebooted into a blank screen. After a hard reset I was finally able to launch the actual game.

The intro logo video was choppy, though nice to see it's a product of my hometown, at least partly (Toronto/Montreal).

In video options, it was preset to all lowest on 1280x800 (on my hd1080p display) except for the AA. I dialed that down a notch, which showed up right away in the 3D-engine rendered darkened church scene as odd highlight glitches, but at least without stuttering -- my rig is barely up to this monstah.

The opening sequence followed the familiar canonical FC escape path, and I have to say I liked this start better than those of 3 and 4, partly because I all ready knew what to expect, partly because it was just a better job all around (practice makes perfect I suppose), and the story is based on some kind of reality I can directly relate to. The night forest, busted-up cabin shootout and wild pickup chase scenes are perfect, and thus far I really like the guns. The rednecks are armed to the teeth like most rural Americans, stupidly brazen, aren't bullet-sponges, and can be dropped by one or two hits anywhere in their bodies.

It's a great ride - enjoy it - but was, and so far is, a one-time play. This may have to do with my relationship with the narrative (don't seek gameplay spoilers as I think they may do what they say on the tin).

The angling sub-game is a genuine pleasure and a welcome time-out from the action.
