Just been doing a search for android (trying to find recommendations of apps to install after rooting the phone) with search from today to the beginning of time. Results for the recent gaming thread were returned, but when trying to expand the list, the left hand pane whited out. Cleared cookies and cache but no difference. Using chrome if that's of any difference.
Not really the point Matt was making, I think. If it's a choice between search having a time limit or the site running like shit, I'd choose the former. So while the search (in that regard) seems shit, it's for a reason.
I'd prefer the time limit to kick in on a successful search, and maybe only on the second consecutive successful search (to allow you to tweak), but Matt knows this stuff far better than I do.
And the actual results are decent now, which is the main thing.

That's a pretty good idea. I also wonder what kind of load search puts on the server. Matt is that something you track? I'm wondering if a dedicated DB or machine would help with that?
Ahhh, the age-old 'if you can't do better shut up/fuck off' gag. It's always a winner, guaranteed to make the recipient skulk off into the corner, and not make you look like an arrogant prick. True.
Actually, the repeat time is only one of the intermittent problems with search (others being that it occasionally fucks up frames, but then frames are fucked up anyway, so perhaps that doesn't matter).
