Android Import Books problem

Phone - Desire S, stock Sense ROM.
For some reason, every time I reboot, I get a 'Import Books....Please wait for a moment' notification in my notification bar. I can't clear it, and it's there even if I leave it for 24 hours.
If I force close the HTC Reader app then the notification goes away, until I next reboot the phone, when it comes back.
I've deleted all books from the books folder on the SD card, I've deleted all books from the HTC Reader library, but I'm still getting the issue. Any ideas?

Probably impossible to do unless you're rooted and have a file explorer that can delete from the system partition or something.

Yep, and rooting the desire s isn't straightforward.

Something to do with s on and s off.

Have you tried unrevoked?

Nope, but to be honest, other than this recent issue I've not had a problem with it not being rooted, the phone is fast enough and there's nothing I want that is restricted to root access.
