It's my graphics card, right?

What he said^

You have neglected to include your monitor in your specification list and what it's maximum resolution is. If it is 1024x768 then that'll be why you can't go above. Most monitors these days support reporting their maximum resolution, refresh rate and colour depth to the graphics card. Most graphics card will read this information and lock you out of the resolutions that won't display.

If the monitor is supposed to be able to go higher than 1024x768, it's got to be drivers. It's always drivers when something like this happens. Either because they're not installed at all, not installed correctly (installed, but not the currently active driver) or they're bugged.

If that is indeed the case, start by trying new graphics card drivers. Go to the AMD Driver Download thingum, download the latest drivers for your card and install them, reboot and report back.

Ah, that explains it. I had no idea that monitors could be limiting, this is about 10 years old and will be the reason for the limit. I didn't want to toddle off to buy a new monitor without knowing wtf was going on.

Thanks.

I have a monitor that is 11+ years old, and it can still do way more than 1024x768.

Check drivers before toddling off for a new one (unless you want a new one anyway).

I do want a new one anyway, that is BIG. Monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 570V TFT which has the 1024x768 limit, according to this here page so it all makes sense now.

I'm doing 1280x1024 on the same card, and I don't even have one of those wide-screen monitors (just a 17" NEC trinitron).

Remember Dan, it's not size that matters, it's what you do with it that counts. :Y (your mum)

The reason I say cable is that when my parents had a new computer/monitor I used an old VGA cable and couldn't do the widescreen res that the monitor should use. Changed the cable to different/newer one and it worked fine.

Or drivers.

Or something else.

Read the thread properly next time :(

I agree, yet there's always someone who gets impressed that yours is bigger, or feels inadequate enough to have to mention their smaller size up front.

It's a UK mag that believes that graphics cards are best tested with some lame game (even if the target audience might be video editing or 3D modelling or whatever.)

Right click desktop, select screen resolution, adapter, advanced settings, list all modes. (win7).

Shows all the supported modes for card. There is/was one for the monitor but I can't find it, might have just been for Nvidia cards though.
