The graphics card can obviously support far higher resolutions - are you saying it's broke?
Can you play something 3d-y in 1024*768, Portal 2 or summat? If so, then the card can't be broke.
Ah, that explains it. I had no idea that monitors could be limiting, this is about 10 years old and will be the reason for the limit. I didn't want to toddle off to buy a new monitor without knowing wtf was going on.

I agree, yet there's always someone who gets impressed that yours is bigger, or feels inadequate enough to have to mention their smaller size up front.

Right click desktop, select screen resolution, adapter, advanced settings, list all modes. (win7).
Shows all the supported modes for card. There is/was one for the monitor but I can't find it, might have just been for Nvidia cards though.
