It's easy to blame left or right for this. But the fact is that there is a large section of the UK that is marginalised, disenfranchised, disaffected, do not feel a part of a community, do not feel like they have any control over their destiny, and do not feel like they will ever amount to anything, all despite living in one of the wealthiest nations on Earth. And it doesn't solve anything to just say "well I came up from a council estate and look at me."

They aren't mindless, they are exerting their influence. And as it became clear that it was possible to do so with impunity, it is barely surprising it spread.

I'm not condoning looting, but I can understand where it comes from. Burning peoples houses and businesses - the niihlism - is a much more scary idea. I was talking to mates who live just a couple of hundred yards from Reeves Corner while it was up in flames and they were $hitting themselves - there was no justification for that.

I think you're spot on, but the idiotic comments seem to get more attention - like this halfwit ~

OK - enough!
Someone has got to get a grip.
An immediate curfew in town centres after 20.00 hours until 06.00 next morning; anyone caught breaking the curfew to be arrested and kept in custody until a £1,000 fine has been paid (for a first offence). Rising to £10,000 for a subsequent time.
Also, immediate setting up of "Boot Camps".
Yes! I'm serious!

I read a splendid one advocating the police use of bears in riot control.

Though I suppose they may have to introduce quotas to insure that there are a token few black bears among the polar bears...

I was reading about water cannons yesterday, apparently their pressure is so high they pretty much blinded a guy in Germany recently, and they've been known to break bones. People in Northern Ireland were saying they were the best riot-breakers they'd seen in action. I guess the reality must be a bit more impressive than the hosepipes I imagined!

I saw that too - police bears... interesting idea

I don't know who the government think they are "fighting back" against - they don't seem to realise these people are part of their own population

Must be, I imagined the same thing!

Thanks Jon - I'll give that a read.

There was someone on TV earlier saying they're not really going to be suitable with what's happening. They're not very mobile and you have to manoeuvre them into position to use them. They're good in N.I. where a protest tends to happen in one place but not much use on a mobile mob.

(No idea whether this dude was speaking from authority but it sounds kinda plausible)

I love this one. Drew this would /kill/ you if it happened! The phone part that is.

They should be rounded up, phones should be confiscated from every person there. They should then have to go through an application process to retrieve their phones, in doing so identifying themselves, and then given an opportunity to give their reason for being there. In proven criminality cases, they should incurr a temporary or even permanent ban from obtaining mobile phone/internet account.

Here is a pretty gruesome picture (don't click it if you're sqeamish) of what happened to the guy in Germany
http://thethirdestate.net/2010/12/the-truth-about-water-cannons/

Theresa May has apparently authorised the use of these things now, according to the article in that linked.

haha. Why would any of them bother getting their phone back? They're only going to go get pay-as-you-go ones, probably by more looting!

That's classic Have Your Say, that is. Especially the "Yes! I'm serious!", which can be translated as "I appreciate my ideas are hugely impractical and morally untenable, but can you imagine if they weren't? The erection I obtained just thinking about it is actually starting to hurt."

The trouble with water canons, according to the EXPERT they had on the BBC earlier, is that when they run out of water, they have to be refilled.

I'm really glad that they had an EXPERT on to explain that really complex concept for me.
