I suggest you create a volcano made of obsidian.

I dislike obsidian since it takes so long to correct the many mistakes I'd make. Maybe gravel.

I wouldn't make it out of gravel, as then you wouldn't be able to hollow it out and put a secret lair in it.

Maybe make it out of rock, with a layer of obsidian over the top, and some patches of Netherrack set alight for effect. And of course lava rivers.
