Probably don't even need to go that far - I suspect a 75% JPEG would balance filesize/quality acceptably.
I wonder if doing a 8-bit PNG with only 64 colours might even give a good balance - just tried it on the above image and it comes out at 103KB (i.e. 40% filesize of the JPG).
There are PNG optimising utilities that can probably do that in a scripted way.
Teh server probably doesn't have FTP running by default, whereas I basically just have to type in a user/pass/etc and it's all there.
(The firewall at work blocks the port, otherwise I'd have it all done already.)

My IP is dynamic, but in practice it's been the same for the past year or so, even after the tiem I forgot to pay my bill and got disconnected and had to wait a day to reconnect, so hopefully it should stay the same.
