I was out and we had a bit of lightning. Turns out an old router I was using as a switch decided to crash. Should be sorted now.

I feel the same way.  I really didn't put much thought into it, but when I read what you said it clicked.  That's excatly how I feel.  I just want a big sanbox to build stuff.  If I want to fight shit I'll find a game that does it 1000 times better than minecraft.

You disappoint me. :(

I'm sorry.  But if it makes you feel any better I disappoint a lot of people.

*****  I just noticed that spell checking built into Chrome doesn't work when you use TinyMCE.  WTF is up with that?

TinyMCE probably uses an editable DIV rather than a textarea.

[insert rant about stupid browser makers and standards committees and so on]

I don't think I'd consider Blender a game.

Only because you've become accustomed to a very narrow definition of "game" and aren't thinking clearly.

quote:
game noun 1 an amusement or pastime. 2 the equipment used for this

If you treat it as such, Blender can be a game - just like balancing a broom on your toes or pulling faces at a child or throwing a frisbee for the dog - they're all games.

Ah, but the combination of building stuff and fighting shit is something Minecraft does so, so well. I'm mostly bored of vanilla peaceful right now (although I'm currently playing with the Technic/Tekkit mod pack on peaceful) but survival multiplayer is very appealing, which is why I want Teh server updated. :x

I'm with Ken on this. The combat in Minecraft is so fucking appalling that it's not the basis of any good combination of anything.

I like the pressure of survival but I do not think that the pressure is at all well-presented.

Wurm is far better in that regard.

If I were, that'd be fine.

I'm bitter because a) none of the enemies are a particularly potent threat and after you have armour, weapons and torches (i.e. 30 minutes into a game if you know what you're doing) they become no threat whatsoever and b) the combat is so painfully fucking clunky.

If there was more variety in the toughness of the enemies - if there were sort of boss monsters you had to kinda team up to take down (employing some actual tactics and shit) then that would be fine.

Or if the combat felt fun and fluid and visceral and tactile and responsive then that would be fun too (even if the enemies remained easy, it'd be fun to just hack your way through them out in the wilds).

The problem is that the combat is neither challenging nor (in and of itself) enjoyable. It's not really a pressure (after those first 30 mins or so), it's just a constant fucking annoyance. There's no sense of threat to the enemies, they do not feel like a challenge to overcome, they just serve to irritate.

The building side is very well realised and the combat doesn't come anywhere near matching it and feels entirely out of place.

What it was was people like you making a game to build shit and then asking your friends if they'd like to help. And then our friends (Peter) add a bunch of stupid shit in.

You're playing it wrong.

Just because you can shoot straight down into a cave and come up with a hoard of iron and diamonds before the second night doesn't mean you should do that.

If mobs aren't a big enough threat then don't wear armour, and don't use swords or bows.

If you want tactics and teamwork then get one of the mods for that and/or do PvP.

Not that I disagree that there shouldn't be tougher mobs, and dungeons with a single spawner are far too easy, but on the whole the game is still way better than Morrowind AND has better music too.

I knew you'd say that. And it's /ridiculous/.

The game is good so long as you... don't play it?

I want to go and get the best materials. I want to then make the best weapons and armour. I want a challenge after I do so.

I don't want to use mods.

You're defending bad design.

I'm going to pretend you didn't say that about Morrowind otherwise I'm honour-bound to literally execute you. Legally of course, I have a writ.

I'm not defending bad design, it's just incomplete is all, because Notch/Jeb/etc has to waste so much time adding different coloured wood for people like you instead of adding trolls and yetis and snakes and eagles and tigers and bears and wraiths and sharks and WTF did Firefox just crash for when it wasn't even doing anything!? :@

Anyway, I need to sleep.

They don't need more (though that would be good too). They need to make combat not fucking dreadful. Badly designed, motherfucker.
