It's not Notch, it's Jeb now, and he also fixed the naked sheep thing.

To be fair, I suspect there may have been a fair bit of cleaning up stuff rushed to get 1.0 ready he had to do, so I'll be waiting until 1.2 before deciding if he's making it better.

So far that's got climbable vines, a jungle biome, and new AI for zombies and wolves - not tried them out but feeling optimistic.

Of course, I'm not letting myself play at the moment because I'm trying to focus on getting stuff done, but hopefully I'll have the bulk of that out of the way by the time 1.2 is finished.

Aye I know, Notch is still responsible though.

But yeah, it's too little. It would be so fucking easy to keep this game interesting. I mean it lends itself to it - just add more block types, more things to find and discover and make - i.e. make what's good about the game better and keep it fresh for long time players.

But no, they insist on adding peripheral shit which is nothing to do with what makes the game good. And little of it.

They don't seem to understand what their game is. I am increasingly thinking that Notch was just an idiot who got lucky.

I've been saying that from pretty much the start!

Why don't you listen to me!? :(

me x3

I think he was a bit shocked at how popular it became, doesn't really know why and doesn't really know what to do with it now.

I too would be happier with more variation on the existing stuff, couldn't give a crap about potions, magic & feckin dragons.

It feels like it's turning into more of a fantasy style game. Not quite an MMORPG but certainly in a direction I don't like.

Go bug Jeb to finish the modding API.

Soon as that's public there's bound to be heaps of people clamouring to build a mod that removes potions/etc and expands things in a more natural direction.

Aye, exactly how I feel.

You tried Terraria?

I played it a while back expecting minecraft in 2d, which is absolutely isn't. It shares superficial similarities but its emphasis is wholly different.

But I played it again more recently, being a bit more patient. and it's pretty awesome. It has far more depth than minecraft - there's a reason to keep exploring, you can find artifacts and stuff which helps you progress and you can trade and materials keep being useful (I mean in minecraft it goes stone > iron > diamond and then nothing. And you can get to diamond in like an hour of play without breaking a sweat).

You can build in Terraria (in fact, you have to - your house serves a purpose (multiple purposes actually) unlike Minecraft). But building is not the point - it's not got that feeling of taking on immense building projects you get in Minecraft.

It's more about developing your character by getting better gear. Which necessitates exploration and so on. If you fancy it all, give it a pop!

(Has host & play multiplayer built in (works when pirated, too))

Mods is a separate thing though. I don't think modding a game to be what you want it to be is the same as playing a well-rounded, cohesive, balanced thing. Also we'd all disagree as to what mods to use.

Jake plays Terraria a fair bit, but I always thought it looked a lot like 2D minecraft (though he swears it's not) - maybe sometime

Aye, it's superficially like MC but in fact not at all. S'worth jimming to give it a try for sure.

I'm pretty sure I was crying about that before. They add things that are stupid instead of the things that will actually make people keep playing.

Like the need to fucking eat. :C

What's that got to do with building /anything/?

Have you tried to build anything without eating?

With a decent API it just takes someone with the right vision to create a single mod to expand the original game in a cohesive way.

I think I built a Lego petrol station once while hungry.

Does that count?
