Any idea why Minecraft would be crashing my PC?

My system isn't cutting edge but it isn't old; 3gb RAM, 3.16ghz Core 2 Dual, Radeon HD 4800.

Within about four seconds of playing Minecraft, my system will just shut down without warning. It is very upsetting. And only Minecraft that does it; no problem playing the latest games.etc, but Blocky-minecraft causes this.

I can play it on my Macbook Pro, but I find myself not playing it as much as I'd like because I need to clear my desk (a small old writing bureau :$) of keyboard, mixer, junk.etc so I can play it with a mouse.etc.

Any ideas? :(

In Minecraft options change the draw distance from far to normal. That fixes about 99% of crashes.

It was already set to short :? It is playing, windowed, so far. I shall try going outside and seeing what happens :&

Hmm, what JVM are you uusussusuing?

6.23. I think :$

It's running okay now, but I'm frightened to maximise the window.

Is there currently a console command to make items appear? I'd like to play with the redstone, but am well.. lazy.

Sun one aye?

And yes: http://wiki.hey0.net/index.php/Commands

/item itemname(or item id number, get it from the minecraft wiki) number

Um, possible Oracle? I didn't even know they had anything to do with Java. Is the Sun one what I should have?

And thankee!

It's just caused a shutdown again, so I will certainly be installing the Sun java if that's what you recommend.
From: Drew (X3N0PH0N) 3 Feb 2011 04:59

Yeah Sun Java. Didn't even know Oracle did a JVM :O

(Might be the same thing repackaged though, with Oracle owning Sun)

You on 64bit? If so get the 64bit VM. If you've already got the 64bit one try the 32 bit one :Y

Ah, it is the same thing. Mine has no mention of Sun, however - nor does the "Sun" Java website :D

Is Minecraft just surprisingly intensive? I may take the side-panel off the case tomorrow and see if my graphics card is hidden beneath dust.
From: Drew (X3N0PH0N) 3 Feb 2011 05:09
To: steve 340 of 3934
It's quite intensive yeah, being java. It should hit the cpu harder than the gfx card though, I think. Actually there's a stats thing in game if you hold down... one of the F keys. Forget which. Try that and see if the loads look unusual.

What's your spec?

Taking the server down in abotu 5 minutes to back it up and move to 64bit.

On it's return, the World will be living on a RAM Disc and the server will have 3GB allocated to it. Should make things a lot nippier :-)
