I'm surprised no one's done roads/paths and signs yet. There's usually someone on a server anal enough to need to link everything up. WE NEED PB.

I've added an entrance and started on the inside. Will continue after pub.

Hmmm, a transport network you say?

Why, this seems like the sort of project I could get behind!

I guess what we need really, more than a transport network as such (cos we have the warps for that) is signposts/paths through stuff for when people just want to have a look around at all the cool stuff people have made.

I might see how my 3G connection actually handles it at some point soon, but even if I do and it works ok, I wont be on for long since I have a huge queue of things to do for at least the next ten days. :(

A transport network can include signposts and paths?

As an out-of-game thing, someone could create an imagemap for the png map, and make it display a preview (i.e. the images you linked to earlier in thread) when you roll over the appropriate area.

I wonder if there's a way to export an overhead view, which could then be used for some kind of Google-Maps-powered ... map.

We're too busy MAKING STUFF unlike SOME PEOPLE.

And yeah, a transport network can include those things but what I was getting at was that transport will not be its primary purpose (we've got that covered), it will be more of a tour-network.

Cartograph can definitely do a square, overhead map. Dunno about the plugin Kos is using but I'd be surprised if it can't.

I will build Teh Tourist Lineā„¢, a rail network with stops to all the sights of Teh Mine.

Google-maps style can work with isometric, and it makes things more recognisable.
(top down of a sand pyramid might even be invisible?)

If there are big things that would obscure areas, it just needs four maps generated - from NE/SE/SW/NW - with a rotate button.

What? Right. I'm setting up another line in competition which will optionally link off my rollercoaster.
