not convinced it could be done in a week, especially as minecraft.net seems to be down (again)

I find the clearing part enjoyable, so I'm up for that, but I don't know I'd be much help on dome construction etc.

are you planning to get all the elevations etc right too?

Given the diameter, is 16 blocks below sea level enough to build the dome properly, or will it hit the ceiling?

I'm probably the same! I'll happily clear lots of ground.

I didn't pluck 16 out of thin air you know. :P

The whole Eden Project site is ~450m² - most of which is outdoor gardens and assorted buildings - the two biodomes are only about 1/6th of that space combined.

The largest dome is 55m high.

Bedrock = 0..4, sea level = 64 and invisible ceiling = 128

The reason for dropping 16 is:
a) to stop the tip of the big one from reaching cloud level and looking crap.
b) the site is an old quarry, so is actually in a dip in the ground anyway.

Technically, to be accurate, we should probably be around 30..40m above sea level, and then drop a certain amount down from that - but that's probably taking things a bit too far. :)

As right as possible, what with not having actual blueprints to follow. :)

Knowing the biodome heights along with width/length should give us a fair guide, but if we're going to do it I'll also try and track down heights of the other buildings/structures to make it easier.

I'm trying to figure out if you'd make an outstanding or a terrible foreman. We will see.

minecraft.net is back online

any preference as to where clearance is done?

I'm going to go hunt around for a suitable area (i.e. make sure it's not going to collide with anyone's structures, but also isn't too far) and then create a warp point there.

Once I've done that I'll put a central marker, and if you could start clearing ~200..250 in each direction from that marker that'd be great. :)

btw, here's a satellite view with 1m = 1px = 1 block

The yellow bit is the main area, and we can add car parks and roads and stuff at the end, if we feel like it.

I don't think you mean 450m², that's only 21mx21m.

:$ I hate area maths.

Here...

The beautiful white lines represent the towers/warp points.

What do you think?

How about a 1/32nd scale instead? :| :| :| :| :|

Maybe somewhere that's a bit closer to sea level? Just a thought. I don't really know of any alternative sites.

That was the flattest place I could see. :'S

The scale/distance is the main problem though. :/

Going 250 in each direction would be HUGE, so might do it 2m=1 block instead. :S

Until we decide for sure what we're doing, if anyone wanting to help clearing only goes to ~100..125 in each direction, that'd be good.

That way, it's not wasted effort if we decide to go half size, but still useful if we decide to go full size.

This is a stupid idea.

I renounce all claim and link to the idea.

It's finally come to this... a game where you are offered the oppourtunity and have the will/inclination to make a /car park/? And have fun doing it?

In a game where cars don't exist (at least until someone figures out how to build a V6 engine and suspension out of blocks) this seems like a little otiose.

C'mon Peter, the bio-dome thing is a nice idea, but don't sacrifice flair n' fun for accuracy.

Having said that, and never having played the game, I can still see how building a vast construction could be engaging, making sure every detail's right etc etc - it's a throw back to playing with construction toys and building replicas of your favourite things, so maybe there is something inherently entertaining about creating a flat grey area with white lines all spaced out neatly, in measured rows with enough space to park a mine cart (in an OCD way)?

Pfff, where's your ambition, man? Huge is good! It's got to be big enough so that you can't see the opposite side of a dome even with the view distance on full.

And if you need the sea filling in, well, I have some experience with that.

(incidentally: I'm in London for now but should be returning home tomorrow. I have Minecraft on my laptop but it's shit playing it without a mouse)

I have an app which adds momentum to the trackpad. Makes it feel more like a trackball and makes first person games bearable. I recommend such things.
