Vanishing Server

Anyone else noticed that Teh seems to be randomly vanishing? Been doing it since yesterday, I think. I'll click for new messages and get a 'Firefox could not find the server' page loading instead of the message list. Seems to sort itself out aftera minute or so though.

I haven't noticed any of that. It could just be that god hates you.

Check backup.tehforum.co.uk address to see if it's DNS vs server?

After checking that, and noticing similar things to Kos quite often it seems the DNS is the problem here.

Pinging 77.235.37.217... success in 9 milliseconds.

Pinging www.tehforum.co.uk... success in 1015 milliseconds.

No problems here.

Touch wood (if it's your own, John), the server is actually doing really rather well right now and I'd rather not poke it in case it decides to start sulking. Uptime for the server currently stands at 158 days (mighty impressive for this server!), and MySQL 137 days (!!). Apache is only 6 days, but that's explained by me shutting it down to do a backup of the server last week.

No difference between the IP and domain here. Quite a reasonable (for my interleaved line) 42ms average for both.

If I query the 123-reg name servers for www.tehforum.co.uk I get the response "*** tehforum.org can't find ns2.123-reg.co.uk: BAD ERROR VALUE", but querying the idnet DNS servers and a select few other ISPs correctly resolves the domain to 77.235.37.217.

Or not, because I was having a spafe moment as was doing things backwards. However I have noticed because of that, that we seem to have lost our an RDNS record again.

Hmm.

That reminds me, there are people who still use the .org domain, my hosting logs say so. I thought everyone was on .co.uk these days.

Though, I've just gone to .org and it forwarded me right to the actual forum start page on .co.uk

Pings fine here too (43 ms for both url and ip). I have had the thing Kos is on about, it was happening a few times a day a week or so ago but it's cleared up for me lately.

The index.php redirects to www.tehforum.co.uk/forum/, but if you go straight to www.tehforum.org/forum/ you won't be redirect.

Not sure where people get tehforum.org from. It only seems to be linked to by a couple of sites according to Google and it's not, or shouldn't be the primary domain on this server, that should be co.uk and we don't have an RDNS record.

I might change it to redirect to www.tehforum.co.uk in Plesk.

Perhaps there is a cream you could recommend to hurry the clearing up process?

Just done the pingy thing, more or less identical for the two results. I'll try again during my next episode.

how do i know if my dsl is interleaved?

Usually your router or modem will tell you in the connection status / summary where it also lists things like sync speed, line coding (GDMT, G.Lite, ADSL2, etc.).

Or you can ring up your ISP and ask them. They should be able to tell from their end.

Just had it happen again and managed to make my clumsy fingers work quickly enough to do a tracert while it was out.

C:\Documents and Settings\Kos>tracert www.tehforum.co.uk
Unable to resolve target system name www.tehforum.co.uk.

Yeah, I had a server not found error. But 5 minutes later it was founded again.

That says DNS error to me which will be 123-reg fucking up as we don't operate our own DNS servers any more (but maybe we should)

Well in that case I say fuck the 123 Reg in the ass.
